Mitochondrial Network Modulation Approach Using Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO) Therapy and Nb-UVB for Treating Vitiligo
Official title: MitOxyVit: Mitochondrial Network Modulation Approach Using Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO) Therapy and Nb-UVB for Treating Vitiligo
MitOxyVit is testing whether hyperbaric oxygen — breathing oxygen at higher than normal pressure, in a sealed chamber — can help in non-segmental vitiligo.
The thinking behind it starts with mitochondria, the parts of a cell that produce its energy. In vitiligo, melanocytes — the cells that give skin its colour — are lost through a combination of immune attack and oxidative stress, and mitochondria are involved in both. The study asks whether treating with oxygen under pressure changes that process enough to slow the loss of pigment and encourage colour to return.
This is a small early study: five participants at a single hospital. A study of that size can show whether an approach is worth pursuing, but not whether it works.
Who can take part?
Adults aged 18 and over with non-segmental vitiligo diagnosed at least three months earlier.
Between 4% and 60% of the body surface must be affected, not counting the palms, soles and backs of the hands and feet.
Full eligibility is confirmed by the study team at screening.
The study is run by Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Nice at one site in France. It is due to start in September 2026 and to finish in March 2028.
Start date: September 01, 2026
Completion date: March 31, 2028
