Celebrating Professor Valarie Molyneaux Award

The World Vitiligo Day Organizing Committee is proud to share wonderful news with our global family. Valarie Molyneaux, Founder and President of VITFriends, has been awarded the honorary academic title of Professor Honoris Causa in Health Education and Patient Advocacy.

This distinguished honor was conferred by Professor Torello Lotti, Rector Magnificus of the Prisco Sapientia Institute in Zurich, in recognition of Valarie's lifelong dedication, compassion, and leadership in patient advocacy, public awareness, health education, and vitiligo community empowerment.

The Heart Behind the Movement

For more than twenty years, Valarie has been a guiding light for people living with vitiligo. After developing the condition in the early 2000s, she transformed her own difficult journey into a clear mission: making sure no one would ever have to face vitiligo alone.

What began as a small support group in Boston grew into VITFriends, one of the world's most respected patient-led vitiligo organizations, with strong connections across the United States and partnerships spanning multiple continents.

Valarie has helped shape modern patient advocacy through support groups, educational programs, media, podcasts, public awareness campaigns, legislative outreach, FDA patient engagement, and countless World Vitiligo Day initiatives.

In 2016, she organized the World Vitiligo Day rally in Washington, D.C., bringing the global movement to the U.S. capital and helping elevate vitiligo within public policy discussions.

Her advocacy also helped inspire government recognition across the United States, including the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' proclamation of June as Vitiligo Awareness Month, highlighting the growing public recognition of the condition and the importance of continued education and research.

"Real change doesn't happen because someone raises awareness once.

It happens because someone keeps showing up, year after year, until the world starts listening."

More recently, Valarie provided quiet, steadfast leadership for the Power of Advocacy: 2026 Leaders Summit in Hartford, where nearly fifty advocates, state officials, and community leaders came together for strategy, training, and real-world action—another example of her remarkable ability to turn awareness into meaningful progress.

More Than Our Skin

Many of us also came to know Valarie's spirit more deeply through the award-winning documentary More Than Our Skin, especially her moving segment "Lean On Me." Her story takes us from isolation and self-doubt to confidence, resilience, and joyful service to others. Instead of allowing vitiligo to define her, she built a vibrant community where thousands have found hope, friendship, and the courage to live fully and openly.

A Recognition for the Entire Movement

This recognition belongs not only to Valarie, but also to the patient movement she has helped shape. It affirms that patient leadership is now recognized alongside scientific and clinical excellence as an essential force for improving health care, advancing education, and strengthening public understanding.

On behalf of the entire World Vitiligo Day family, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Professor Valarie Molyneaux. Thank you for your extraordinary leadership, unwavering generosity, and years of service to people living with vitiligo around the world.

Congratulations, Professor Valarie!

Your World Vitiligo Day family could not be happier for you.
